London schools have been faced with vandalism to school property, increase in IT equipment theft as well as a rising cost of damage due to arson. These are major issues where the effects lead to unforeseen recovery costs – including repairs to damaged property, charges for false alarm calls, subsequent increases to insurance premiums, as well as the tangible and intangible costs to rebuild and re-instate a normal learning environment.
An alternative was needed to the most common option of intruder alarms and static CCTV cameras for site security – where these devices often do not provide assistance until after an event, and still have the disadvantage of instigating false alarm rates or the overheads associated with post event evidence collection.
Synetrix is the network architect and managed service provider for the London Grid for Learning (LGfL), with access to over 2,700 schools and education institutions throughout the capital.
With new CCTV digital technology becoming available, Synetrix had the idea to develop a remote monitoring solution using the existing London Grid for Learning network to tackle these serious problems of theft and damage.
The service was designed with the LGfL by Synetrix in partnership with ADT and Redbridge CCTV - assimilating expertise in network management, environmental security and fire safety, data and child protection laws, and criminal prosecution - to provide a complete security monitoring service that brings together these disciplines and makes them available to a school under a single contract.
Available to any school within London’s 33 boroughs, buildings are remotely monitored, detector-activated and digitally recorded with high quality cameras with night vision, uniform coverage around the perimeter of a site, an effective tannoy system, advanced motion detection and secure connectivity to the monitoring centre at the London Borough of Bromley.
The London Grid for Learning’s Campus Monitoring and Protection service for schools involves continual monitoring and hence offers a much more preventative answer to reduce unauthorised access and criminal activity over conventional methods of security.
Working with the London Grid for Learning and other customers in Education, Synetrix sees an increasing demand for delivering multiple services such as CCTV monitoring over existing broadband connections – a benefit in simpler management of multiple systems as well as optimising an existing investment.
